Trying to decide what to wear to your headshot photoshoot may seem daunting. “What do I wear?” is probably the most common question we get asked when a client books a headshot photoshoot. If you are in the market for an undated professional headshot picture, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve compiled a list of 5 tips that will help you dress for success when you schedule your headshot session.
Tip # 1 – Avoid distracting patterns
Busy elements in clothing can distract from the most important part of a professional headshot, which is your face Your clothing should complement your eyes/hair color etc and not dominate the frame.
Tip # 2 – Bring a change of clothes…or two
I spend a lot of time on Linkedin and I’ve noticed that people that initially thought that one headshot would be enough will soon get board. So instead of going back in to get another professional headshot, they will use a selfie taken on their phone. Instead, bring an extra tie, a different color top or blazer, or sports jacket. The variety of photos will allow you to swap out the images but still maintain your professional look.
Tip # 3 – Don’t forget the shoes
You may think that a headshot photo doesn’t require you to wear great shoes. While it’s true that the typical headshot crop is head and shoulders, you may decide to have your photographer grab a few images that are full body during your session. The last thing you want is to miss out on an opportunity to capture great professional images that you may be able to use in places such as your website or on other social media platforms.
Tip # 4 – Bring accessories
Do you have a necklace that goes well with a particular top that you love? Is there a lapel pin that is relevant to your work that you would like to feature? Accessories make great compliments to a well arranged outfit and they can really make your professional headshot pop!
Tip # 5 – Make Sure Clothes Are Properly Ironed
I’ll admit, Photoshop is capable of some wonderful things, but there is no substitute for a nice crisp dress shirt or blouse. Freshly dry cleaned clothing is best but a good old fashioned ironing will also do.
Pro Tip: If you’re not sure about whether an outfit will photograph well, bring it in anyway. The more variety you have, the better you will feel about your headshot session!
